Where to Buy Emeralds in Colombia: An Operator’s Guide
Colombia produces 70-90% of the world’s emeralds. Most come from three mining districts in the Boyacá mountains: Muzo, Coscuéz, and Chivor. If you’re traveling to Colombia and want to buy emeralds, this page covers the practical options and how Guanabana can help if you want to do something more involved than walking into a jewelry shop.
What Makes Colombian Emeralds Different
The color comes from a specific mineral profile (chromium and vanadium) that produces a deep green with a slight blue undertone. Brazilian and Zambian emeralds have different mineral content and look different to a buyer’s eye.
The clarity is also distinctive. Colombian emeralds tend to have fewer internal inclusions (called jardín in the trade), which lets light pass through more cleanly. Although it’s clear that all natural emeralds will have inclusions, the less they are and the less visible to the naked eye, the better. Only lab made emeralds are completely inclusion free. But Colombian stones have great color and clarity, this is why they command higher prices internationally and why they’ve been the standard for high-end jewelry for centuries.
Three Ways to Buy Emeralds in Colombia
If you want emeralds and you’re in Colombia, here’s how the options break down.
1. The Emerald Trade Center in Bogotá
The Centro Internacional de Esmeraldas in downtown Bogotá is the country’s commercial hub for emerald trading. Think New York’s diamond district, except for emeralds. Merchants, cutters, and certifiers cluster in one area. If you’re already in Bogotá, this is the most established place to view a wide range of cut and certified stones.
The caveat: prices here include the full retail markup. You’re paying for convenience, provenance, and certification rather than for stones at source prices.
2. Local Jewelers in Major Cities
Most Colombian cities have jewelry shops carrying emerald pieces. Quality varies, and pricing varies even more.”
For visitors without a knowledgeable contact, walking into a random jewelry shop and trying to evaluate emeralds is risky. Quality assessment takes real expertise. Untrained buyers regularly overpay or end up with treated stones marketed as natural. If you’re going this route, bring someone who actually knows emeralds.
3. Direct From the Mining Region
The lowest prices and most authentic sourcing come from buying directly in the mining region. Rough emeralds are sold in open markets in the Boyacá mining districts. Initial cutting can be arranged locally. Final cutting and certification typically happen in Bogotá and can be sent back by courier.
This path requires local contacts, knowledge of how to evaluate rough stones, and willingness to travel several hours from major cities into the mining region. It offers the best prices and the most authentic experience. Most travelers can’t access it due to the logistical requirements needed to do so. But we can.
Guanabana’s Connection to the Emerald Region
Guanabana is an adventure tour operator based in Medellín. We’re not jewelers, and we don’t run a retail emerald operation.
What we have is direct experience in the source region. We’ve made several trips into Boyacá’s emerald mining areas, gone into the active mine shafts ourselves, met with miners and merchants, and built working relationships with the local people who actually move stones from mine to market. We’ve also done the full circle: bought rough emeralds at the source, sent them by courier to Bogotá for cutting and certification, and had the finished stones delivered back to Medellín.
Most adventure tour operators in Colombia don’t offer anything emerald-related. The mining regions are far from the standard tourist circuit, and the relationships needed to navigate them well take real time to build. Few operators have done that work.
Custom Mine Expedition Tours
For travelers seriously interested in visiting the mining region and buying emeralds at the source, we arrange custom private expeditions from Medellín. These are 2 to 3 days, small groups (ideally 2-4 people, maximum 6), with English-speaking driver, local emerald expert at the market sessions, and full coordination of any cutting and certification work in Bogotá.
The trip is private and customizable. Pricing depends on group size, number of nights, and specific itinerary preferences. The trip cost itself doesn’t include the emerald purchases, those are entirely at your discretion based on what you want to buy and your budget. Cutting and certification fees in Bogotá are handled at cost.
This isn’t an off-the-shelf product. If you’re seriously interested, contact us with your dates and group size, and we’ll prepare a detailed proposal.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much should I budget for the emeralds themselves?
Entirely up to you. Souvenir-grade rough stones at the source markets start around $50 USD. Mid-grade stones suitable for jewelry typically run $100-500. Investment-grade rough can run $500-$1000 and up. The local expert at the market session will help you understand what each price tier actually buys.
Are Colombian emeralds a good investment?
Top-grade certified stones from established cutters hold value internationally. Tourist-grade stones from random jewelry shops generally don’t. If you’re buying for investment, certification matters and so does provenance. If you’re buying as a souvenir or gift, focus on what you like rather than resale value.
Can I bring rough emeralds back to my country legally?
Yes, in most cases. Colombia allows export of emeralds purchased from registered sources. Some countries have import declaration requirements above certain values. Check your home country’s customs rules before traveling.
What’s the difference between Muzo, Coscuéz, and Chivor emeralds?
Muzo emeralds tend toward warm, slightly yellowish-green. Coscuéz produces stones across the full quality spectrum. Chivor emeralds are often a cooler, bluer green. All three are top-tier sources internationally. Mineral profile differs slightly between regions, which is why some buyers and collectors prefer specific origins.
