Helicopter Tour from Medellín to Guatapé
A 20-minute private helicopter flight from Medellín’s regional airport (Olaya Herrera) to Guatapé, instead of the typical 2-hour drive each way. You skip the road traffic, get aerial views over the Aburrá Valley and Park Arví, and land at the base of the Rock of El Peñol. We’ve been running this tour since 2016 with certified Colombian helicopter operators using Bell 206 L3, L4, B3, and Robinson R66 aircraft.
The trip is private (just your group), the same helicopter takes you back to Medellín after lunch, and the whole experience runs about 4-5 hours door to door including ground time at Guatapé.
This is a custom on-demand tour. Contact us in advance with your dates and group size for scheduling and current pricing.

Why People Book This vs. Driving to Guatapé
The standard ground tour to Guatapé is 1 hour 45 minutes drive each way. With pickup and return, it’s about 11 hours door to door. Most travelers do it once and find it worthwhile.
The helicopter version replaces 4 hours of driving with 40 minutes of flight time over genuinely interesting terrain. It also does something the ground tour can’t: aerial views of Medellín’s metropolitan area, Park Arví’s reserve, and the Guatapé reservoir from above. The Rock of El Peñol from the air is a different experience than from the ground.
This isn’t budget travel. The helicopter tour starts at $1,979 per person at 2 passengers and gets cheaper per person as group size increases. Travelers who book it tend to fall into specific categories:
- Couples on premium trips, often anniversary or honeymoon
- Travelers with limited time who want Guatapé but can’t afford a full day on the road
- Groups where the per-person cost works out for 4-6 people
- Wow-factor moments: birthday, marriage proposal, milestone trip
- Travelers who’ve done Guatapé by ground and want to see it differently
If you want Guatapé and have the budget, this is the upgrade. If you want a budget Guatapé experience, our ground tour bundle is the right choice.

About the Helicopters
We work with certified Colombian helicopter operators using these aircraft:
- Bell 206 L3: 6-passenger turbine helicopter, widely used for executive and tourism flights
- Bell 206 L4: Updated version of the L3, same passenger capacity
- Bell 206 B3: Smaller variant, 4-passenger
- Robinson R66: 4-passenger turbine helicopter
Maximum capacity per flight is 6 passengers and 400 kg (881 lbs) total weight including baggage. Groups larger than 6 require multiple helicopters, which we coordinate.
All aircraft are operated by Colombian-certified pilots under Aerocivil (Civil Aeronautics of Colombia) regulations. The operators we partner with have decades of combined flight experience in Colombian terrain, including the mountainous routes between Medellín and Guatapé.
Our Helicopter Operations Track Record
We started running helicopter tours from Medellín to Guatapé in 2016. Over the years, we’ve coordinated everything from couple anniversary flights to one corporate event that put 20 people in a single MI-8 helicopter (Soviet-era heavy-lift aircraft) on a Medellín to Guatapé charter. To our knowledge, that remains the largest single-helicopter charter from Medellín to Guatapé that any tour operator has run.
We mention this because it speaks to the kind of helicopter logistics we’ve handled in the past. Most tour operators in Medellín who offer helicopter trips are reselling other companies’ availability. We coordinate directly with multiple operators, which gives us flexibility on aircraft type, scheduling, and group size.
The MI-8 charter is no longer available — that aircraft type is no longer operating in Colombia for tourism purposes. But for current bookings, the Bell 206 family and Robinson R66 cover everything from couples to small group flights.
Booking Logistics
This is an on-demand tour. To book, contact us with:
- Your dates (with at least one alternate if possible — helicopter availability depends on weather and operator scheduling)
- Group size
- Pickup location in Medellín (your hotel or apartment)
- Any add-ons (jet ski, boat ride)
We confirm helicopter availability and pricing within 24 hours. Most bookings happen 2-4 weeks in advance. For peak season (December, January, June, July) earlier inquiry is recommended.
Weather is a factor: helicopter flights cannot operate in heavy rain or low cloud cover over the mountains. If weather forces a cancellation, we reschedule (when possible) or refund. We’ll tell you the morning of your flight if there’s a weather concern.
Who This Tour Is Right For
Works well for:
- Couples on premium Colombia trips, especially anniversary or honeymoon travelers
- Groups of 4-6 where the per-person price drops below $1,000
- Time-constrained travelers who want Guatapé but only have one day
- Travelers wanting a wow-factor experience for special occasions
- Anyone who’s already done Guatapé by ground and wants to see it from above
Probably wrong for:
- Budget travelers: the ground tour bundle is significantly cheaper and still good
- Solo travelers: per-person pricing only works at 2+ passengers
- Travelers prone to motion sickness or with helicopter anxiety: small helicopters move differently than commercial aircraft
- Those who want maximum time on the ground in Guatapé: the helicopter format gives you 3 hours, not a full day
