How to know if a tour company is legit in Colombia
Here’s how to know if a company is legitimate in Colombia in under thirty seconds.
With so many fly-by-night unregistered and illegal tour “operators” and companies, you want to know who you’re dealing with, don’t you? Here’s how to find out if you’re dealing with a real, legal company or just any sham operation with a website and social media (if even that) and no professionalism or accountability.
There’s an official government department just for this purpose, it’s called RUES, which stands for REGISTRO UNICO EMPRESARIAL Y SOCIAL, which translates into unique registry for companies.
It’s the only official department for this. It’s website is a very simple and quick tool to find out if a tour company, or any company for that matter, is a legitimate, registered, company and if it’s yearly certifications are active. In a few simple steps we’re going to illustrate to you how you can find this out in less than thirty seconds on the RUES website. After opening the link to the RUES website you will find this first page:
In the window where the red arrow is pointing, type the name of the tour company and then click on the magnifying glass icon to the right.
If the company exists then this will appear on your screen:
Check the bottom left of the window where the red sketched circle is to see if the company is “Active” because it happens that companies fail to keep up to date with all licenses and registrations, sometimes for years. Where the red arrow is pointing to the right is a link to the National Tourism Registry, the RNT, which is mandatory for all tour operators. By opening this link you will find out if a tour company has or doesn’t have RNT, in other words, if it’s operating legally.
If the company doesn’t exist, then you’ll get a notice that says “No results found” followed by blank.
So now you know if you’re dealing with real, legitimate companies or just one of the many sham operators that pop up weekly without being a legitimate business, thus risking your integrity. So watch out!
