Colombian Safari & Dude Ranch
Colombian Safari is the best-kept secret together with cowboy adventure!
A vast lost land filled with amazing wildlife!
To the southeast of Colombia, there is a huge expanse of forest grassland territory that makes for one of the best adventure tours Colombia has to offer!
This immense territory goes from the foothills east of the Andes mountains all the way south to the Amazon rain forest. To the east, it passes through Venezuela all the way to the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. This territory is called Los Llanos Orientales, The Eastern Flatlands.
Five months of the year (from May to October) is the rainy season that turns the forest grasslands into temporary wetlands. This seasonal flood cycle makes the region unique for its wildlife all year round. Here you will find the biggest jaguars in the world (males reach up to 100 kilos/220 lbs). Likewise capybaras, deer, crocodiles, anacondas, pumas, howler monkeys, ocelots, iguanas, and more, plus around 400 species of birds. For example, there are 70 species of water birds such as the scarlet ibis and the white-bearded flycatcher.
Colombian Safari is the new adventure tour frontier!
As a result we have added it to Guanabana’s roster of adventure tours in Colombia.
To get to our Colombian safari lodge we fly commercial 1 hour from Bogotá to the city of Yopal, capital of the state of Casanare. From there we drive 2 hours through the beautiful and exotic llanos until reaching Hato La Aurora, a 20,000 acre privately owned cattle ranch. The owners of La Aurora are staunch defenders of the local wildlife and take strong measures to conserve and protect the local ecosystem to ensure they live with cattle in harmony.
Lodging and food experience 100% authentic to the local culture of the Colombian cowboy, the Llanero.
The house lodge installations remain true to the cattle ranch lifestyle of the Eastern Plains, they are simple and spartan. This reflects the culture of the local cowhands who are are called Llaneros (Plainsman), a people known for being brave, tough, and free-loving spirits (their role during the war of independence against Spanish rule was pivotal). The llanero has many cultural similarities to the Gauchos of the Argentinian Pampa.
The Llanero people have a strong cultural identity throughout the entire Llanos Orientales. Their music -called música llanera- is very popular for its liveliness. The main instrument is the harp with a quick-stepped dance. The llanero gastronomy is world-famous for their carne a la llanera, mouth watering meat prepared Plainsman style over an open-pit fire.
The Jaguar
The jaguar is the big star of the show but is also notoriously shy, so jaguar sightings can not be guaranteed. With that said as of late the past couple of years, the jaguar population has increased, furthermore sightings have become more common. Each year there are more sightings, so if you’re in luck you’ll get to see a jaguar!
